Fiver, a dwarf lop eared rabbit, is our September Pet of the Month. His lair is a lovely inner city apartment – which may come as a surprise to some of you out there who imagine rabbits require acres of land to run about on. In fact an apartment offers plenty of hopping space for dwarf breeds like Fiver, and he is rather proud of the space – ensuring nothing comes or goes without him checking it out.

Meeting Naboo, our August Pet of the Month, sure was an entertaining experience. Cockatoos are emotionally intelligent creatures and, at only two years of age, Naboo is already a very unique personality. Upon our arrival she managed to climb to the highest perch on her 4 storey cage – previously uncharted territory. Although she was poopin’ herself at having strangers in her home, she couldn’t hide the fact that she was chuffed with her efforts. We were instantly won over.
Like most toddlers Naboo loves attention but pretends not to. While chatting with Michelle, Naboo looked on coyly from her perch, refusing to come down despite her obvious discomfort. Playing along with young Naboo we went and hid, pretending to leave, so that she could hop down without losing face. When you approach animals it’s easy to forget that they pick up on your fear – Krystal managed to win Naboo over with her assured ways. After years of hangin’ out with Eckles she has a knack!

Chillin’ in the arms of Collingwood young-gun Dayne Beams is our July Pet of the Month, young Chopper, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or Staffy. At only 12 weeks of age Chopper is yet to complete his last shot, meaning it’s best not to take him on walks in public yet. For the interview he seemed pretty content to nestle into the much talked about arms of his owner.

Named after one of Beams’ favorite characters Mark Brandon Read a.k.a ‘Uncle Chop-Chop’ this handsome, two-eared pup is yet to live up to his name. Although it won’t be long before he’s a stocky and strapping 25kg young Staffy and we hear he already has it over his kennel-mate, a frisky Jack Russell. With Beams’ firm governance we’re sure he will be a great fella and will manage to steer clear of the clink! Beams treats his dogs more like mates and says ‘the more time you spend with them, the more attached to you they become.’ He’s absolutely right, Staffies like most breeds thrive on physical and mental stimulation. Staffies also need to be exercised every day and we reckon once he’s old enough to be out and about little Chopper will make a great exercise partner for Beams!

One look at that face and it was love. Looking into its big oogly eyes and pointed beard we wondered ‘was it an owl? a Gremlin? An Ewok?’

The lovable creature was in fact ‘Skinny’ a member of the ancient dog breed, Griffon. Commonly used as show dogs our adorable Pet of the Month was adopted from the Royal Melbourne Show – the runt of the litter, Skinny was too timid for the world of show dogs. Instead she is now the youngest of three pooches owned by Gina and Andy.

John is a regular customer of ours at Upmarket Pets. He loves to come into our store to grab some treats after coming back from a walk up at the local park with Harry and Willy.
Harry and Willy were purchased from Upmarket Pets a little over 4 months ago and John has spoilt them with plenty of affection. John has trained his pups well and they are very well behaved, they sit when told and always eat their treats on their mat.

Irene’s dogs are some of our more loyal customers and have been shopping with Upmarket Pets for over 10 years. Irene’s dogs are named after the infamous actors Marlon Brando and Robert DiNero. The two fluffy peas in a pod are an amazing duo that love each other to death!

When we first received a Pet of the Month nomination Gypsy was only a puppy that Sandra had just brought from our store.

When it came to choosing a Pet of the Month we thought it would be great to catch up with Gypsy who had the cute little blue bow in her hair. The Shih-tzu x Poodle is a common cross breed in our store and one of our staff’s favorite breed.

Lillian sent me a picture of little Hei-Hei to enter her into Pet of the Month. I wasn’t 100% sure about making the winner a rat but the more I thought about it, it made sense. We had a pet rat in the store a couple of years ago and his name was Ernie. He was the cutest, cuddly rat I had ever met and I wondered whether all rats are just as affectionate?

Di and her lovable dog Max are our Upmarket Pets, Pet of the Month winners for February 2009.
We caught up with them and Max’s older brother Bo at our pet shop to see what makes this 12 year old keep on going.

The boys were all neatly clipped and washed when they came in store, and behaved exceptionally. They did what they were told and Bo patently waited while Max was being interviewed.
